State Officials Meet With Feds Over Safety of Election System

The state of Connecticut is working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to ensure that the state’s elections system is safe.

The meeting comes a month after federal authorities informed Connecticut officials that Russian agents attempted to breach the system before the 2016 election

“Yesterday, along with representatives from the state’s information technology and public safety departments, I met with regional officials from the United States Department of Homeland Security to discuss how we can work together to ensure that Connecticut elections are safe from outside interference or manipulation,” Secretary of the State Denise Merrill said in a statement.

“We had a productive meeting and I look forward to working together in the months and years to come to protect our elections, the bedrock of our democracy,” she said.

Connecticut Deputy Secretary of the State Scott Bates said in September that hackers tried to get into the website and got nowhere close to voter registration data thanks to perimeter cybersecurity defenses. He stressed that voting machines were not affected.
