Dog Moved After Shelter Pipes Freeze

A dog had been moved from the Waterford-East Lyme animal shelter to the shelter in New London after pipes froze during this cold spell.

A post on the Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control Facebook page says the water pipes are completely frozen somewhere underground and animals will be staying with New London Animal Control “for the foreseeable future.”

In a phone call, animal control officials said one dog had to be relocated.

How to protect your home from pipes freezing:

  • Aquarion Water Company warns that the pipes most likely to freeze are those close to an uninsulated wall, door, window, garage, attic, basement or along an uninsulated floor.
  • To help prevent pipes from freezing, open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
  • They also recommend adding insulation to exterior walls wherever possible. wrapping pipes with insulation and making sure all doors and windows to the outside are tightly closed.
  • Let a faucet fed by pipes exposed to extremely cold weather drip to prevent the water inside from freezing.
  • Turn on the water periodically at all faucets that are exposed to cold air when outside temperatures have been below freezing for several days.

MDC recommends turning off the main valve closest to the water meter if a pipe does burst and calling a plumber.
