QU Volleyball Volleys Back After Court Battle

The Lady Bobcats are back in action on the volleyball court after a bit of drama.

The revived Quinnipiac University volleyball team will play three matches this weekend to open a season that almost was cancelled.

Last spring, the University announced that the volleyball program was one of three being eliminated because of budget constraints.

In May, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction that prevented Quinnipiac University from eliminating women's volleyball.

Judge Stefan Underhill granted an injunction that keeps the team intact until a gender equity lawsuit against the school can be heard.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut brought the lawsuit on behalf of the team and its coach, who say Quinnipiac isn't in compliance with Title IX laws.

At the time of the ruling, University attorney Mary Gambardella said Quinnipiac would be harmed if the volleyball team is reinstated because it has already eliminated men's golf and outdoor track.  She said reinstating women's volleyball would leave the school without gender equity.

The team plays two matches in West Point, N.Y. on Friday before they return to Hamden for the home opener against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Sunday afternoon.
