Opponents of same-sex marriage received a major blow to when ballot question 1 failed.
About 60 percent of Connecticut voters said no to a plan to amend the state constitution. If the ballot question passed, it would prompt the state’s first constitutional convention in 35 years.
The measure was sponsored in part by groups that wanted a state constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled last month that same-sex couples have the right to wed rather than accept a civil union law.
Massachusetts and California already allow gay marriages. Starting Nov. 12, the same holds true for same-sex couples in Connecticut.
However, voters did approve the other question on the ballot. Resident who are 17 will be able to vote in the primaries if they turn 18 by Election Day.
