Police are investigating the thefts of two statues from a Waterbury cemetery, one weighing as much as 700 pounds.
The two statues were taken sometime over the weekend, according to a spokesperson for the Waterbury Monuments Committee. A group of veterans laying wreaths to commemorate the Pearl Harbor anniversary noticed the thefts.
Missing from the entrance of Riverside Cemetery, is a bronze figure depicting death. It is part of a larger monument, which also includes a bronze statue of a woman depicting life. That statue was not removed. The cemetery, and the monument, were dedicated in 1853.
Also missing from the cemetery was a smaller statue that was part of a headstone.
The missing statues are the latest of a string of bronze thefts from monuments in the area.
In recent weeks, bronze plaques have disappeared from war memorials in Derby, Ansonia and Shelton.
