Former Branford Cop Seriously Assaulted: Police

A Branford man is in serious condition at Yale New Haven Hospital after an early morning assault.

According to Branford Police, 58-year-old William Stewart who is a former Branford police officer was struck numerous times in the head and body with a blunt object on Saturday.

Police arrested 36-year-old Neal Amendola of Patrick Lane and charged him with Assault 1st. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Police say Stewart who is a family friend of the Amendola’s went to the Amendola home to fix a garage door. Officers arrived at the home at 11:20 a.m. to find Stewart seriously wounded.

According to the Branford Patch, Stewart was reportedly struck with a baseball bat.

Police are uncertain as to why the assault occurred. The incident is currently under investigation.
