Gillette Castle State Park Reopens

Gillette Castle State Park in East Haddam has reopened.

It was closed because of a power outage after a transformer on the main road was damaged during storms last night, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The property includes a 24-room mansion, which resembles a medieval castle, as well as hiking trails and areas for camping and picnics.

William Hooker Gillette, an actor and son of former U.S. Senator Francis Gillette, designed the home, which was built during the five-year span between 1914 and 1919.

The state bought the property in 1943.
