Live Hand Grenade Found in Torrington Basement

Homes were evacuated in the area of Oak Avenue in Torrington after a resident cleaning the basement discovered a live hand grenade Monday evening, according to police at the scene.

Torrington police and fire officials were called to 436 Oak Avenue when a man renovating the basement of his two-family house came upon the ordnance.

Authorities evacuated residents in the area. Oak Avenue was closed in the area of Marvin Street while authorities responded to the scene.

A state police bomb squad identified the device as a live French or German hand grenade. Police said the squad planned to remove the grenade and conduct a controlled explosion in a safe place.
