Uber Drivers Descend on Capitol

More than 100 drivers for the new ride-hailing service Uber Technologies flocked to the state Capitol on Monday, hoping to urge Connecticut legislators to allow them to keep operating in the state.

State lawmakers are considering a bill that would require the Department of Transportation to craft new regulations affecting Uber and similar companies and drivers.

But department Commissioner Jim Redeker told the legislature's Transportation Committee on Monday there's still not enough data to determine what steps the state should take, despite a study on the subject.

At a minimum, he said special license plates and driver's license for ride-hailing operators could be a first step.Connecticut taxi and limousine companies have filed a federal lawsuit against Uber and Lyft Inc., arguing they're essentially unregulated taxi services and should be subject to the same rules.
