Already Jailed, Now Charged

DNA links man to a 2002 rape

Angel Martinez, 29, is serving time at Northern Correctional Institution in Somers for a conspiracy conviction.  His DNA was collected, as is that of many prisoners, and entered into a state database.

A  woman was raped in Hartford in 2002, according to police.  She was walking to work when a man approached her from behind, she said, putting her in a choke hold and threatened to harm her unless she did as she was told.  A rape kit was gathered at the hospital, and the DNA sample entered into the same database.

In April, the database matched the two, saying the sample from Martinez matched that discovered in the rape.

Martinez is now charged with first-degree kidnapping with a firearm and two counts of first-degree sexual assault.
