DOT: Salt Wouldn't Have Prevented Massive Crash

There was no salt on Route 110 in Shelton before cars started colliding, creating a massive 50-car pile-up, state transportation officials say. But, had they put the salt on the road, the rain would have washed it all away, they say.

In that crash just before 1 p.m. on Sunday, 62 people were injured and six were taken to local hospitals. No injuries were life-threatening.

Department of Transportation spokesman Kevin Nursick says the DOT was warned at about 11 a.m. Sunday that weather conditions could make roads icy. But, he says, plow crews usually need a two-hour lead time and they arrived in Shelton after the chain reaction began.

A section of Route 110 was closed for about five hours after the crash.
