Groton Police Arrest Stabbing Suspect

Police have arrested a man suspected of stabbing a 46-year-old man multiple times in Groton on Friday.

Robert  Benfatto, 20, of Groton, is in police custody and faces a second-degree assault charge.

Groton police received reports of the stabbing at 2 p.m. on May 30.

The victim, who police have not identified, was treated for multiple stab wounds in his back at Pequot Health Center. Police said a Good Samaritan drove him to the emergency department there.

The attack, which police said was not random, happened near Midway Oval and Vergennes Court, according to the initial police investigation. The victim was targeted, police said.

The victim's injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

Police are holding Benfatto on a $25,000 bond and will bring him to New London Superior Court on Tuesday.
