Hartford to Put Gunshot-Detecting Sensors in City

The city of Hartford is investing $150,000 in a program to put sensors in high crime areas.

The sensors can detect gunshots and determine from where they came.

Mayor Pedro Segarra announced the program on Friday along with the resumption of a state and local shooting task force to help solve gun crimes in the city.

There have been 17 homicides in Hartford this year, up from 11 during the same period in 2010. Police Chief Daryl Roberts said there also has been an 8 percent increase in non-fatal shootings during the same time period.

The city was denied federal funding for the ShotSpotter system, and the mayor said it cannot afford cameras -- normally deployed with the sensors-- to help identify shooters.
