Holiday Weekend Means Fewer Lifeguards

End of Summer Means Fewer Lifeguards

If you’re heading out to a Connecticut swimming area this Labor Day weekend, expect to see fewer lifeguards on duty.

Beach-goers will be greeted with signs saying “no lifeguards on duty” and park staffers will be on hand to notify the public.

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) said that timing is the reason.

"Labor Day is the traditional end of the summer season and following the holiday, DEP does not staff state swimming areas," said DEP Acting Commissioner Amey Marrella.

According to the DEP, with the holiday so late in the year, most lifeguards have already returned to school. Some beaches will still have lifeguards this holiday weekend and all parks where there are usually guards will still have staff to administer first aid and patrol the beaches.

But people are warned to watch their children and only swim in approved areas.
