Lobster Diver Gets Money But No Apology

CT Man With Legal License Gets Paid for His Trouble

Edward Brown, a lobsterman from Ledyard, got a few bucks for his trouble, but no apology.

Brown and a friend were diving for the tasty critters in Stonington harbor on a June night in 2001 when they were arrested near the Stonington Small Boat Association.

Brown had a license to catch lobsters and had four in his possession, when officers shined a flashlight in his eyes and ordered him out of the water.

Police charged the two men with criminal trespass and breach of peace.

Brown settled a federal lawsuit against Stonington police, claiming his civil rights were violated when he was arrested while diving for lobsters. He'll accept a $12,000 payment for the 2001 incident. because, he says, he doesn't want to drag his family through a trial.

The charges were dropped, but Brown says he's still bothered that he did not get an apology from police.
