Malloy Makes Cuts to Cover $73.6 Million Deficit

Reductions were made using Gov. Malloy's budget-cutting authority.

Gov. Dannel Malloy is trimming funds from a state programs and imposing new restrictions on hiring to help cover a projected $73.6 million deficit that's developed in this year's state budget.

Malloy's budget director, Benjamin Barnes, released a list of cuts and withdrawals of unspent agency funds on Tuesday.

While Malloy is not calling for a state hiring freeze, state agencies are being asked to provide Barnes' office with a justification for any new hires.

Barnes said the Office of Policy and Management will approve those related to public health and safety, whether the position will gain to sustain revenue greater than the cost of the position and other qualifications.

The reductions were made using Malloy's budget-cutting authority.

Barnes said Tuesday's actions will enable the administration to balance the budget by end of the fiscal year on June 30.
