Help Needed for Memorial Garden to Honor HIV Patients

A local group that helps people in need now needs help from the public.

For 25 years, the Latino Community Services in Hartford has been there for Latinos in Connecticut who are diagnosed with HIV. But now the non-profit needs help.

LCS works closely with people who are battling the virus, providing them with help and support. They also offer HIV and STD testing for those who need it and counselors and staff work closely with clients and they become friends.

When a person who the organization has helped dies, LCS wants to honor them in their memorial garden.

The garden is their way to respect the privacy and confidentiality of their clients.

“Our Memorial Garden will serve as a garden of respite and reflection and an outdoor room for staff and clients to enjoy, and inspire hope and motivation to set goals around their HIV care and treatment,” Executive Director Yvette Bello said.

The goal is to make it a nice place to celebrate the lives lost. But the organization needs your help. They need donations to buy and engrave plaques with the initials of late clients.

Right now, the memorial garden is just scrap wood and dirt. That’s why they welcome any donations, whether it be mulch, soil, plants or money to spruce up the garden.

If you’d like to help them out visit the Latino Community Services Web site.
