Police Souring on Chief Limon

The lack of confidence in New Haven's new police chief has come to a head.

During a union meeting on Wednesday night, police officers voted to hold a "no confidence” vote in Chief Frank Limon and his two top assistants, reports the New Haven Register,  The vote is scheduled for Feb. 3.

Limon brought the lead aides from Chicago and union president Sgt. Louis Cavaliere told the Register that the “Chicago 3” are destroying the department.

“These people came from Chicago with no vision, no plan,” Cavaliere told the Register. “This department is not being run the proper way. It’s affected the morale.”

“I'm here to do my job to ensure that we reduce violence in New Haven by forging strong relationships with the community and responding to the needs of our residents,” Limon said in a statement.

The union wants Mayor John DeStefano to fire the three or get them to deal with the union "in good faith."

Cavaliere told the Register that a similar confidence vote was delayed in the fall with an understanding that the police administration and union would talk about problems.

Cavaliere said that never happened, and said the chief has been untruthful with the union, according to the Register.

When he was hired last year, Limon recruited Assistant Chief Thomas Wheeler, a former commander with 20 years experience at the Chicago PD as well as Assistant Chief Tobin Hensgen, a technology expert, who spent 23 years as a Chicago patrol officer.

Limon has a four-year contract and refuted that his tenure in New Haven is coming to an end.

“With my team, we're taking a regional approach at addressing the roots of the crimes that take place here. I look forward to working with the union and the rank and file to serve New Haven's residents and make our City a safer and more welcoming place to live, work and visit,” he said in a statement
