New Haven Woman Has Drugs, Small Child in Unregistered Car: Police

A New Haven woman is facing several charges after police found her in an unregistered car with stolen plates with drugs and and her small child inside, authorities said.

According to police, officers approached 47-year-old Michele Thompson, who was in her car along with a child, in the area of Elm Street and Kimberly Avenue in West Haven the evening of Nov. 5.

Police said Thompson was driving a car with stolen license plates, and when officers confronted her, she became argumentative and started swearing at them. She couldn’t provide a driver’s license or registration for the car, and police found crack cocaine and other unlabeled drugs in the car with her, authorities said.

While police were arresting Thompson, a man approached, claiming to the child’s father. Officers questioned him and said he couldn’t provide the child’s birth date or other basic information.

Thompson was charged with risk of injury to a child, fourth-degree criminal mischief, obtaining drugs illegally, possession of narcotics, failure to renew her car registration, improper parking, illegal operation of  a motor vehicle without minimum insurance, theft of license plates, improper use of a marker/license/registration and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

She was held on a $20,000 bond and the child was taken into the custody of the Dept. of Children and Family Services.
