Newington Man Accused of Killing His Wife Is Found Dead in Prison Cell

A Newington man accused of shooting and killing his wife in Newington in September has been found dead in his prison cell, according to the state Department of Correction.

Officials confirmed that 45-year-old Michael Torbicki, Jr. died from an apparent suicide early Monday morning at Macdougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield.

DOC officials said a staff member found Torbicki in his cell with an object around his neck during a routine check. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Torbicki was being held on murder charges. He is accused of shooting his wife, Patricia Torbicki, in their home on Gilbert Road in Newington on Sept. 21. Michael Torbicki had been at Macdougall-Walker Correctional since Oct. 13. He had been placed on suicide watch.

Torbicki's lawyer, Jon Schoenhorn, says Torbicki was supposed to be on a court-ordered suicide watch in prison.
