Oil Tanker Rollover Caused Traffic Backup

An oil tanker flipped over in New Haven on Wednesday morning when the driver swerved to avoid colliding with another car, according to police.

The crash happened at 7:02 a.m. at Kimberly Avenue and traffic was impacted as crews siphoned contents from the vehicle before lifting it back upright,

Police said the driver for Apple Oil got off Interstate 95 South, cut across Ella Grass Boulevard to try and get back on the highway, but swerved to avoid another vehicle and landed on its side.

Around 10 gallons of home heating oil spilled on the road, but none got into the storm drain, police said. Firefighters and crews from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to clean the spill.

Police said no one was hurt and the driver of the oil truck was determined to be responsible for the crash for failing to grant the right of way.

The exit 45 off-ramp of Interstate 95 was closed for awhile.
