Prison Staff Injured in Prison Fight

The fight comes days after unions warned layoffs would lead to problems.

Days after unionized prison guards warned that staffing cuts in the state Department of Corrections would lead to inmate riots and other violence inside the state’s lockups, there was an incident at Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown.

Six corrections officers were injured while breaking up a fight between six inmates on Friday, according to the Department of Correction.

A group of inmates were in the housing unit to take a shower at 12:13 p.m. and another group of inmates started a fight with them, DOC officials said.

Corrections staff who quickly stopped the fight suffered back and shoulder injuries, Department of Corrections officials said. Some remained on duty after the incident and some sought outside medical treatment.

State Police were called in to investigate.

The facility has not been locked down.

The population at the prison as of July 1 is 611 inmates and there are 294 staff members, according to the Department of Correction Web site.
