Thieves Wipe Out Blind Woman's Bank Account

Police said two men stole woman's debit card and went on spending spree.

Thieves cleaned out the bank account of a legally blind Torrington woman who is on a fixed income.

Patricia Withee lost her debit card last month. She believes she may have dropped it in a parking lot.

Two men spent the $500 that was in the account, according to police. They withdrew more than $100 from an ATM in Winsted and spent the rest on items in a Wal-Mart and Stop and Shop in Torrington.

"They took everything out of my account, so I had nothing else to live on for the rest of the month," Withee said.

Withee said the card was kept in a paper sleeve with her pin number written on the outside, so her caretaker could have access to it.

The suspects were caught on surveillance cameras at the Winsted ATM as well as inside the Stop and Shop.

Police are now hoping the public will be able to identify the two men in the photos.

"Typically people like this are involved in narcotic and drug activity and usually the care is not there," Lt. Michael Emanuel said.

Once the account had been cleaned out, the debit card was tossed on the side of the road in Winsted.

The card was handed over to police and that's how they were able to trace it back.

"I hope they find who did it. It's a terrible thing to do," Withee said.

The suspect vehicle used by the 2 male suspects is described as a Pontiac Grand Prix or Grand Am newer model, with a moonroof and white decaling across the top portion of the windshield. The two suspects are caucasian, one being medium build and the other being more of a heavier build. The heavier male has a full beard.
