Tuesday is Deadline for Voters to Register in Advance

This year will be the first presidential election where the state of Connecticut will offer same-day registration. But Tuesday is the deadline to register in advance – and leaders across the state are urging residents to take advantage so they won’t risk waiting in long lines - or worse – losing the chance to vote on election day.

As of Monday, the state reported 2,115,434 registered voters in Connecticut. The Secretary of the State is still expecting more to get their names on the rolls to cast ballots next week.

Residents can register online or at the town or city clerk’s office through Tuesday. Mailed registrations must be postmarked Tuesday to be eligible.

The state allows same-day registration at designated locations, not necessarily a voter’s normal polling place.

Mayor Toni Harp of New Haven doesn’t want a repeat of 2014, when about 100 people, mostly college students, were not able to cast ballots because they wanted to register on election day and were still in line when the polls closed.

Those who are pre-registered can still cast a ballot if they’re in line when polls close, but those who are waiting in line to register won’t have that option.
