A 77-year-old Bridgeport woman is in serious condition after going under water at Jennings Beach in Fairfield on Wednesday morning.
Fairfield police have identified the woman as Emma Shtypel.
People saw her go under water while swimming at 7:49 a.m. and alerted Department of Public Works workers that she appeared to be in distress, police said.
The DPW workers pulled Shtypel ashore and a registered nurse and wife of a retired lieutenant of the Fairfield Police Department immediately started CPR and treated her until a member of the Fairfield Police Dive Team and another officer arrived and took over treating the woman.
Shtypel was transported to Bridgeport Hospital and is listed in serious condition.
Police contacted the woman’s family.
