Burned Bible Found at Holiday Display

A Bible had been soaked in something and ignited.

Less than two weeks after New Haven kicked off the holiday season by turning the lights of the tree on the green on, vandals have struck and a Bible was found burning underneath it, police said.

At 12:10 a.m., police officers and fire fighters responded to a call that the tree was on fire.

The tree was not on fire, police said, but a Bible apparently left underneath it was.

It had been soaked in something, police said, and placed on top of the electrical feeder cables that power the tree lights.

The damage estimates are about $1,200.

Firefighters shut power off to the tree to prevent damage.

The Parks Department is making repairs and police are looking for the people responsible.
