A 47-year-old man who was injured when he struck a tree in East Haven on Thursday afternoon has died, according to police.

Police said 47-year-old Wilber Nazario, of East Haven, was injured in a single-car crash on Forbes Place around 12:10 p.m. and was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he later died. He would have turned 48 on Saturday.

Nazario was heading south on Forbes Place when he passed a mail truck that was stopped and trying to turn left onto Sydney Street, according to police.

They said the mail truck was not directly involved in the crash and was not struck.

Nazario went off the road, onto the sidewalk, narrowly missing a telephone pole, but hit a tree head-on, police said.

The officer at the scene got into the driver’s compartment and treated Nazario while East Haven firefighters extricated him, police said.

Police are investigating the crash. They ask anyone with information  to call investigators at 203-468-3820.
