Shoplifter Caught After Locking Keys in Car: Police

A would-be shoplifter ran into trouble when he realized he locked his keys in his car in North Haven Thursday morning, police said.

According to police, 55-year-old Samuel Lopez, of Waterbury, grabbed a drill combo set from a shelf at Home Depot on Universal Drive around 7:15 a.m. and ran out of the store.

Lopez parked his car, a stolen BMW, according to police, outside the exit of the Home Depot. When he ran to the car, he realized he had locked the keys inside.

When officers arrived, the found Lopez trying to smash the car window with a brick, police said.

Lopez ran from the scene but was taken into custody after a brief struggle, according to police.

He was charged with third-degree larceny, sixth-degree larceny and interfering with police.  Lopez was handed over to the Waterbury police, who had an active arrest warrant for him, police said.
