State Lawmakers to Consider ‘Debt-Free' Higher Education

The Connecticut state legislature is considering “debt-free” higher education.

The Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee approved a bill that would allow a study on the feasibility of the implementation of a debt-free higher education program for in-state students attending public institutions of higher education.

It would look at other states and how they have done it, including Tennessee, which has a tuition waiver program for students to attend two years of community college.

There is no proposal to allow college for free in Connecticut, but lawmakers said they need to at least look at ideas because neighboring states are.
