AirAsia Tail Surfaces, Stoking Black Box Hopes

Part of the tail section of missing AirAsia Flight 8501 was raised from the bottom of the Java Sea on Saturday, stoking hopes of recovering the plane's black boxes, The Associated Press reported. The tail piece was raised from the ocean floor — about 100 feet below the surface of the Java Sea — using inflatable bags that were then attached to a crane. It was not immediately clear if the voice and flight data recorders were still inside the tail, or if they detached when the Airbus A320 crashed into the sea on Dec. 28, killing all 162 people aboard.
