The Huskies' loss over the weekend to SMU dropped them out of the top 25. It's no surprise that one of the teams now back in the rankings is -- wait for it -- SMU, who have now beaten UConn twice this season.
The good news is that the Huskies are still eligible for the American Athletic Conference and NCAA tournaments, something they couldn't say a year ago when they were facing postseason sanctions. The bad news is that UConn has struggled with consistency and that has them looking up from the middle of the pack when it comes to tournament seeding.
As is stands, Kevin Ollie's team is 21-6 overall and 9-5 in the conference -- but they're only 2-4 against the AAC's top teams (both wins came vs. Memphis). The Connecticut News' William Paxton writes that the Huskies seem locked into the No. 4 or 5 game at the conference tournament, and a likely rematch with Memphis.
But if UConn gets hot over its four remaining regular-season games, that could change. But it won't be easy: They'll face USF in Tampa, then host Cincy and Rutgers before finishing up at Louisville.
