Sea Lion Bites Trainer at Mystic Aquarium

Woman rushed to the hospital after the incident.

A trainer at Mystic Aquarium has been taken to a local hospital after a sea lion bit her during a public feeding demonstration on Monday afternoon.

An 8-year-old Steller sea lion, bit the 34-year-old female trainer in the leg, according to a statement from Mystic Aquarium.

Aquarium spokeswoman Erin Merz said the trainer was following protocols when something apparently spooked the female sea lion.

The injury the trainer suffered is non-life-threatening and she was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital to be treated.

Merz said sea lions will be fed from outside their outdoor enclosure and no trainers will enter until the aquarium reviews the incident.

Mystic has been in national news over the last few months for serenading belugas and, more recently, because Kim and Kourtney Kardashian made a trip with baby Mason.
