Dozens of Middletown residents are out of their homes, but safe, after fire forced them from their apartment complex.

Firefighters responded to the fire at Madison at Chestnut Hill complex on Town Colony Drive at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday and flames were shooting into air, city officials said. Fire displaced about 40 people and affected 20 units.

The blaze completely destroyed one building and collapsed the roof and melted the siding off of another.

Fire alarms did go off, officials said, and the residents were out of their units when firefighters arrived. All the residents were taken to the complex's clubhouse to stay warm. Firefighters from six other towns responded to help.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
