Regulating roosters is more trouble than it's worth.
That was the conclusion Bristol officials made and dropped a proposal on Wednesday to ban roosters in residential areas, the Bristol Press reports.
The proposal would have allowed roosters to remain until they flew the coop. The ban would have applied to anyone but farmers from getting new birds.
Officials said that because roosters look alike, figuring out which rooster has been around a while and which one is new would be practically impossible.
The animal control officer said trying to ban roosters might complicate his job. He can order owners of roosters get rid of the bird in 10 days if early-morning crowing is subject to complaints.
Failing to obey the order could result in a $54-a-day fine.
