What police said was a man’s attempt to steal a catalytic converter turned into a grisly death for the would-be-thief and a disturbing find for the owner of an East Hartford auto body shop.

When the owner of Asian Motors on Tolland Street went to work Thursday morning, he saw legs coming out from underneath a Windstar van and called police.

Beside the man, police found a hacksaw. The car had been up on a jack and police believe it collapsed as the man was trying to remove the catalytic converter, crushing the man’s face and chest.

Police believe the man died overnight.

The man is in his late 40s but has not been publicly identified because police  have not yet notified his family.
