Consultant to UConn: Charge More for Sports, Premium Dorms

Consultant recommends ways UConn can cut costs, add revenue.

A consultant UConn spent $3.9 million on is advising that the school increase ticket prices for high-demand sports games, charge more for premium dorm rooms and parking, and offer year-around classes rather than scaling back each summer.

UConn trustees received from McKinsey & Co. on Thursday those recommendations and others to suggest ways to cut costs and boost income as the school's state subsidies drop.

McKinsey’s recommendations say that, over five years, UConn could save $39 million to $67 million in cuts. It could also raise $14 million to $30 million in non-tuition revenue, depending on which recommendations it adopts.

UConn officials said some ideas are already going into place, such as consolidating some technology services.

They didn't immediately decide on the other recommendations or say which they favored.
