Coventry Girl Killed in Accidental Shooting

Jenn Stanovich was accidentally shot by her brother, according to authorities.

A 6-year-old Coventry girl died Tuesday after being accidentally shot by her 13-year-old brother at their grandmother's house in Georgia, police said.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Jenn Stanovich, of 2891 Main Street in Coventry, was talking to her brother while he was unloading a rifle just after midnight Tuesday morning. The rifle fell to the ground and discharged, hitting Stanovich in the chest.

The 6-year-old was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Stanovich's brother, who was not identified by name in the police report, told police he had been outside hunting armadillos in the back yard. He returned to the house and attempted to clear and unload the rifle. The 13-year-old laid the rifle on a bed, but said he accidentally knocked it to the floor and the weapon discharged, hitting his sister.

Richard Stanovich, the victim's father, and the girl's grandmother both heard the gunshot and ran to bedroom. Richard Stanovich held his daughter until emergency crews arrived.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the shooting.
