Crews Investigate Fire at Liquor Store in Danbury

Fire investigators are trying to determine what started a fire at a liquor store on North Street in Danbury Tuesday morning.

Fire broke out in the front corner of the Hi-Way Package Store, at 88 North St., melting a sign and causing smoke damage to the building as well as apartments behind the liquor store.

Jose Calero, of Danbury, said his wife called and said their home was on fire, so he rushed home from work.

“I got two kids and I thought something happened to them, so I was really nervous,” Calero said. Fire officials said they were able to contain the fire and it did not spread to the rest of the store. hey also set up fans to air out the apartments.

“They took care of everything, thank goodness. My neighbor upstairs, he told my wife and they got out safely,” Calero said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The liquor store will remain closed for now, but residents who live in the house behind it can get back inside.
