Dad Was ‘Extremely' Drunk While Watching 3-Year-Old: Cops

Shelton police have arrested a father accused of getting "extremely drunk" while pushing his 3-year-old daughter in a stroller on Thursday.

Police said they were called to Howe Avenue twice Thursday evening after someone spotted three men drinking alcohol while pushing a stroller.

The first time officers arrived at 412 Howe Avenue, they didn't find any evidence the people were drinking and saw that the child was OK, so they told the men to leave, police said.

Around two hours later, police received another call about the same three men. The caller told police three drunken men in the Cornell Municipal parking lot were playing football with an empty alcohol bottle and being rowdy.

When officers returned to the area, they found the father, Justin Abbott, 38, of Shelton, with a beer in the cup holder of his daughter's stroller, according to police.

Abbott appeared to be "extremely" drunk and told officers he should have listened and walked home the first time they confronted him, police said.

The child appeared to be OK and police reunited her with her mother.

Abbott was arrested and charged with risk of injury to a minor.

Bond was set at $5,000. Abbott is scheduled to appear in Derby Superior Court on July 10.
