Man With Ax Prompted Apartment Evacuation School Lock-In in Hartford

A 55-year-old man with an ax caused police to evacuate a Hartford apartment building and to issue a lock-in for Hartford Public High School on Tuesday morning.

Police responded to 30 Forest St. at 7:57 a.m. after a resident reported someone was banging on the door and a neighbor was screaming in the hallway, police said.

Responding officers encountered a man who was holding a pickaxe and lifted it shoulder length, police said.

An officer then drew his gun and ordered the man to drop the ax, but the ax-weilding man went back into his apartment and locked the door, police said.

More officers arrived and started talking to the man, who said he had a gun and wanted to shoot the place up, police said.

Police then evacuated the building and placed the high school on lock-in until SWAT arrived and police calmed the man down.

At 10:06 a.m., police entered the man's home and EMS transported him for medical evacuation.

The lock-in was then lifted and residents were allowed back into their building.
