A firefighter rescued an elderly man from flood waters at his riverfront apartment in Old Saybrook on Monday night.

When the Old Saybrook Fire Department responded to a telephone pole fire around 7:30 p.m., the fire was out, but a neighbor alerted crews to a man in danger.

The neighbor reported seeing an elderly man walking in the tidal flood waters of the Connecticut River.

Firefighter Bruce Watford put on a life jacket, had a lifeline secured, waded through the high water in the flooded parking lot, forced his way into the building and found the man while searching an apartment.

Watford put a life jacket on the man, secured a life line and brought him back to safety

Emergency medical crews transported the man for evaluation.
