Habitat Home Hit By Crooks

Crooks stole copper pipes and ripped wires of walls

Police in Bridgeport are looking for the people who stole from a Habitat for Humanity house.

The thieves took copper pipes and ripped wires out of the walls, reports the Connecticut Post.

Habitat volunteers on this project come from Fairfield County’s Youth United program and this puts their work six weeks behind schedule, the Post said,

“They raised $75,000 of the $150,000 construction cost by holding bake sales, car washes and collecting and redeeming soda cans,” Julianna Calvin, the organization’s development manager told the paper.

Because of the theft, they’re scrambling to raise money to cover the $3,000 for repairs. Habitat officials said that while they reported the incident to police right away, they waited two weeks to tell the public. They wanted to make sure everyone who put work into the project would find out first.

Kelli Rafferty, co-president of Youth United, told the paper she was shocked to hear about the break-in. "I didn't think that anyone would ever steal from a Habitat for Humanity construction site."
