Man Accidentally Shoots Himself During Struggle With Burglar: Police

A man accidentally shot himself in the abdomen during a struggle with a burglar in Plainfield Friday night.

Plainfield police responded to the Plainfield Shell on 600 Norwich Road to investigate a report of someone shot.

They found Troy A. Burek, 27, of Plainfield, injured with a gunshot wound. He told police that he interrupted an apparent burglary at the house of a family member when he arrived to car for the person, so he pulled out his gun, police said. In the process, he told police he was attacked and that his gun fired accidentally, hitting him in the abdomen.

The burglar ran toward the Plainfield emergency room for William W. Backus Hospital and Burek drove to the Plainfield Shell, where he called police, according to police. Plainfield firefighters and an American Legion Ambulance took him to Backus Hospital in Norwich for treatment and he has since been released.

Plainfield police recovered his gun, which he had a permit for, according to police.

Police described Burek's attacker as a 5-foot-8 slim man between 14 and 18 years old. he was wearing a black sweatshirt, blue jeans, a winter hat and bright blue sneakers, police said.

There was also a second burglar in the home, Burek told police, but he was unable to provide a description.

The state police major crime unit is assisting Plainfield police in the investigation.

Palmer Lane was closed down and limited to local resident access only during the investigation.
