A Bridgeport man who is currently serving an 80-year prison sentence in the slaying of a woman and the wounding of his girlfriend and her daughter a decade ago has been granted a new trial.
The state Appellate Court ruled on Monday that the jury that convicted Durante Best should have been instructed to consider that his actions were self-defense.
Police said Best shot Rogerlina Jones; his girlfriend, Erica Anderson; and her daughter, Octavia, in the chest after an argument with Anderson at their home in May 2006. Jones later died.
A 12-person jury found Best guilty in 2007 of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault and a weapons charge.
