Middletown Man Tased 34 Times Before His Death

State police report says man was "throwing officers around."

Five police officers. A police dog. And 34 shots from a stun gun.

That's what police used to subdue a man at the Middletown Ridge apartments who later died  in May 2010, according to a report state police just released, reports the Hartford Courant.

Five officers confronted Efrain Carrion after police got a call about a man having a "psychiatric meltdown."

"The accused fought his way forward and to the apartment door, barreling through us as if we did not exist," Officer William Hertler said in his statement to state police, according to the paper.

Three officers used a stun gun on Carrion 34 times within eight to 10 minutes, the report states. Still, he managed to escape into the woods, where he also put a police dog in a chokehold. Police used several sets of handcuffs to restrain him and Carrion eventually became unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The medical examiner ruled the cause of death as "excited delirium."

A report in March cleared the officers of any wrongdoing.
