Occupy Hartford Can Stay

Protesters with permits for pop-up canopies can leave them at the park.

As the "Occupy Wall Street" protest continues in Manhattan, so does "Occupy Hartford," and Connecticut demonstrators have scored a big win.

The group met with Hartford officials on Tuesday after the city expressed concerns about the health and safety of protesters who have been camping in tents in Turning Point Park since last Friday.

Police originally ordered the protesters to remove their tents from the park near Farmington Avenue and Broad Street, saying they violated city codes.

But after their meeting, the city made some changes.

Protesters cannot sleep in tents overnight, but the city will allow pop-up event canopies for those with proper permits.

"City officials and inspectors will monitor the site to ensure safety and prevent any health concerns. Discussions are ongoing," a statement from the city reads.

“We are pleased the city has allowed us to keep tents up tonight, and we hope to continue discussion,” Wesley Strong, a member of Occupy Hartford, said on Tuesday night.

The group plans to keep on organizing and continue talking with the City of Hartford. They plan to hold all their upcoming events, including a march to Bank of America, on Friday.
