Turkeys Gone Wild!

The big birds have become a nusaince to drivers.

Call it a case of birds gone wild in Groton.

In just the past few days, wild turkeys have caused a pair of accidents on the same stretch of Interstate 95.

The latest crash happened just before 10 a.m. Tuesday, when a large turkey smashed into the windshield of 20-year-old Kirsten Pechout’s car, according to the Norwich Bulletin. Pechout, of Moodus, was not hurt.

State Police in Montville say a similar incident happened on Monday, but the driver in that case was taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries, according to the paper.

Sgt. Michael Collins, Montville’s resident state trooper, says encounters between drivers and turkeys are becoming more and more common.

“It’s been getting more and more prevalent,” he said. “The traffic startles them, and then they try to take off and fly into the path of other cars. People have to be aware that this does exist out there,” Sgt. Collins told the paper.

The State Department of Environmental Protection says wild turkeys begin breeding in late March or early April, accounting for their increased visibility during the onset of spring.
