Man Charged With Attempted Murder in Stabbing of Girlfriend

A man from Deep River is facing attempted murder charges after stabbing and critically injuring his 23-year-old girlfriend, according to Old Saybrook police.

Andrew T. Craig, Jr., 25, is accused of stabbing a woman at the Super 8 Motel at 37 Spencer Plains Road in Old Saybrook on Friday morning. Authorities responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call around 6:30 a.m., police said.

Emergency responders arrived to find the victim suffering from life-threatening injuries. She was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where she’s listed in “extremely critical condition,” according to police. The victim has not been identified.

Police called the stabbing an isolated domestic incident and said Craig and the victim are in a relationship.

They searched the hotel room and seized evidence, along with 178 bags of heroin and more than $2,600 cash, police said.

Craig is charged with first-degree assault, criminal attempt to commit murder, possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics within tent to sell, possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance and possession of less than four ounces of marijuana.

He’s being held on a $1 million bond and is due in Middletown Superior Court on Monday.

Police are continuing to investigate and said they expect to make additional arrests.
