House Passes Medical Marijuana Bill

The House passed the bill 96-51 after a seven hour debate.

The state House of Representatives has voted to legalize the medical use of marijuana for adults, creating a system that advocates say provides more protections than similar programs in other states.

The House passed the bill, 96-51, after a seven-hour debate, sending it to the Senate. Gov. Dannel Malloy has said he supports the concept.

Rep. Penny Bacchiochi, a lead proponent, said this bill is better than those offered over the past decade because it sets up a system for growing and dispensing marijuana.

But some lawmakers voiced concern that growers and dispensers could face federal prosecution. U.S. Attorney David Fein said they could be at risk.
