With more than 30 antique dealers in town, Woodbury is known as the "Antiques Capital of Connecticut." And you can now add an auction house to town as well, and a week-long celebration of all things old and for sale.
Furniture dealer Thomas Schwenke is launching his new business in May, and has decided to kick off the opening with what he's calling an "Opportunity Sale" May 30. But the town has decided to turn Schwenke's business launch into a week-long celebration of Woodbury's heritage.
Fifty years ago, antique dealers established their businesses in historic homes on and around main Street, turning the town into a rural antiquing destination for collectors, decorators and dealers, according to the Woodbury Antiques Dealers Association.
"We have 30 dealers here, and expect that many will be presenting educational exhibitions and talks during the week of the auction. Merchants will also be offering specials on fabulous meals and accommodations," Schwenke said in a news release.
As for the auction itself, Woodbury Auction will be offering deals on everything from antique furniture, fine art, collectibles, jewelry and a 1966 Mercedes Benz 230SL coupe," Schwenke said.
To take advantage of the specials, auction-goers should pre-register on Woodbury Auction's website to receive discount certificates to present to merchants. Receipts from merchants can, in turn, be entered into a drawing at the sale for auction buying and selling discounts.
